Don't diet. Do this instead.

Don't diet. Do this instead.

In a world obsessed with diets and quick fixes, it's time to shift our perspective on how we approach food. At Step One Foods the heart of our philosophy lies in a simple mantra: Eat real food, not too much, mostly plants. Rather than succumbing to the fleeting promises of diets, let's embark on a journey toward developing a healthy relationship with what we eat.

The Fallacy of Diets

Every day I see patients trying yet another diet. Unfortunately, despite all their restrictions and rigid rules, these programs might promise quick results but fail to deliver sustainable health. Let's face it – the diet industry thrives on the cycle of hope and disappointment. The truth is, diets are not a long-term solution; they can lead to nutritional imbalances, leave you feeling deprived, and even result in negative health consequences.

Food as Nourishment, Not Numbers

As it turns out, our bodies are not math problems to be solved with calorie or point counting. They are intricate systems that thrive on a diverse range of nutrients. It’s when we focus on real, whole foods - not numbers - that we provide our bodies with the essential elements for optimal function. This is not about depriving ourselves but about nourishing our bodies with the goodness they deserve.  It’s less about taking bad things out than it is about putting good things in!  If you concentrate on increasing the good things you will naturally reduce the bad things.  After all, there is only so much room in our stomachs.

Building a Healthy Relationship with Food

The key to sustainable well-being is fostering a positive relationship with food. Rather than viewing meals as mere transactions of calories or points, let's appreciate them as opportunities to nourish both body and soul. Cultivate mindfulness in your eating habits – savor each bite, enjoy the textures and flavors, and be present in the moment.

Facts Speak Louder Than Fads

Research consistently shows that diets often lead to a cycle of weight loss and gain, commonly referred to as yo-yo dieting. This pattern can have detrimental effects on metabolism and overall health. Moreover, the stress of adhering to strict dietary rules can take a toll on mental well-being.  Being perfect is EXHAUSTING.

The Power of Plants

Our philosophy (Eat real food, not too much, mostly plants) emphasizes a plant-centric (but not necessarily plant-exclusive) approach, recognizing the many  benefits of incorporating more plant-based foods into our diets. Plants are rich in vitamins, minerals, and antioxidants, providing a powerful arsenal against chronic diseases. As a big side benefit, by choosing a variety of colorful fruits and vegetables, we not only support our health but also contribute to the well-being of the planet.  Animal agriculture is very intensive in terms of land and water use.
